Today, U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26), Vice Chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force and member of the Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement on the anniversary of the House passing H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act:

"One year ago today, we passed the first major gun safety legislation in over a decade. As I voted, I held a photo of my father in memory of his life that was taken too soon by gun violence," said Mucarsel-Powell. "Today, I am beyond disappointed that this legislation, which is supported by 90% of Americans, is still being blocked by Senate Republicans and President Trump. On average, over 37,000 Americans die from gun violence each year, and twice as many are wounded. Senate Republicans' and President Trump's inaction is a slap in the face to those demanding action, including those in my community and across the country who have lost loved ones to gun violence."

Mucarsel-Powell played a leading role in passing H.R. 8 through the Judiciary Committee last year. She continues to advocate for the passage of H.R. 8 and other commonsense gun violence prevention bills.

In 2018, the most recent year the CDC collected data on gun violence, 2,902 gun violence deaths occurred in Florida.
